Colonial Point

Common Questions

What Type of Church is Colonial Point?
Colonial Point Christian Church is an Independent Christian Church that is non-denominational, but affiliated with the Restoration Movement that dates back to the early 1800's.

The Restoration Movement was started by a group of preachers from different denominations (Methodist, Presbyterian, Baptist) who felt the many divisions within their denominations at the time were not the picture of the church painted in the New Testament. They set out to "restore" the church of the Bible and to make the Bible the source of final authority and not man-made creeds or statements. Each church is autonomous and overseen by a local board of Elders who base their leadership on the teachings of the Bible.

There are currently over 5,500 churches like Colonial Point in the US with a membership of just under 1.2 million. As a church our primary goal is to connect people to Jesus Christ and to help them grow as His disciples.

I Grew Up In Church, But Don't Go Now...Why Should I?

Has it been a while since you've been to church? There are a variety of reasons people stop going to church. Can you relate to any of the following statements?

  • I don't go to church because the church I grew up in was boring.
  • I don't feel worthy of God's love.
  • I'm a good person, I don't need church.
  • I already know all I need to know about God and can go it alone - what more is there to learn?
  • I'd rather just watch one of those church TV programs.
  • Christians are hypocrites.
  • I'm skeptical of the leader's intentions: someone in my old church abused their leadership position in some way.
  • I don't have time to go to church.

Perhaps the reason you have been away isn't even relevant anymore. If you have not been to church in a while, you may be surprised at all the changes! Are you wondering why people even go to church these days?

It's a Place to Belong. When a person trusts Christ as Savior. God's Spirit makes him or her a member of God’s family. All Christians are born into this family that will live forever, where we belong! So we should look for a group of other believers with whom we can meet regularly for worship, teaching, encouragement, and service; in other words, a local church. “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another - and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” (Heb. 10:25)

It's a Place to Serve. God's Spirit gives each Christian special abilities (gifts) that are designed to work with each others' gifts: 'spiritual gifts’. Christians need to be involved in local churches so they can discover their function and use their gifts. In a world of self-centered thinking, Christ's example and command to serve others still applies! We need church, but the church also needs us! In the church we can grow spiritually, and we can also have the thrill of helping others grow. As we discover how God has gifted us, we feel good about helping and grow more!

It's a Place to Be Served. The various parts of your body depend on each other. Your eye gives you vision, while your brain interprets the image so you see it. You cannot see just with your eyes or just with the brain. When you serve in the church, you will find that your needs get met also, we all work together in oneness and purpose for God’s glory. God normally meets our needs by using others, and He uses you to meet others' needs, this is the church’s purpose and Christ is the head of it. Church members need to depend on each other just as the members/parts of a human body do!

It's a Place to Grow. Just as our physical bodies need nourishment, so too our spiritual lives need to be fed. This spiritual food includes worship, prayer, discipleship, good Biblical instruction, and mentoring. As Christians praise God and pray, there is a special bond that occurs. Gifted teachers and preachers who know and use God's Word and care about you can help you grow. So plant yourself in a good church and grow!

It's a Place to Work Together. Christian faith is personal but not private. Healthy Christians are not loners. Jesus said that the world would watch relationships between Christians: “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35). Church helps us learn how to love and obey God.
